Tontine Fibres Acquires Auspoly Business Assets
Sep 14
Tontine Fibres has announced the acquisition of Auspoly’s manufacturing operations.
Tontine Fibres is Australia’s largest manufacturer of Thermal Bonded nonwoven fabrics, and Auspoly is a significant Melbourne based manufacturer of carded and needle punched non-woven fibre based products for the bedding, insulation and carpet underlay markets.
“In these days of doom and gloom for Australian manufacturers we remain committed to local manufacture by continuing to invest in highly efficient processes and innovative products and techniques”, said Jim Liaskos, UBF’s (Tontine Fibres' parent company)Managing Director, “with scale economies through volume as the critical third ingredient to create a sustainable business.”
In July this year the non-woven operations of The Smith Family were integrated into the business of United Bonded Fabrics, creating Australia’s largest non-woven fabrics manufacturer with thermo-bonding and needle punch production capability.
This latest acquisition will increase United Bonded Fabrics’ carded fibre capacity in Melbourne and cements the Company’s leadership position in fibre processing in Australia and particularly for thermo-bonded and needle-punched Carded and Airlay fabrics.
Earlier this year UBF was awarded exclusive rights to AdvanSA’s (formerly DuPont in Europe) range of high performance fibres for the Australian and New Zealand markets, as part of its determination to offer real and differentiable performance based fibre solutions to its customers. UBF’s products are Oeko-tex 100 certified in classes I & II, and carry the Green Tag Gold Plus environmental accreditation.
UBF will continue to operate from Auspoly’s Melbourne site in addition to its five other locations around Australia to minimize any disruption to customers and operations.

Since the launch of the Acousti-PanelTM range of products in October 2010, Tontine Fibres has installed products in many schools in NSW as part of the National BER program. Specifiers have been eager to get on 'board' with the Acousti-PanelTM because of its lightweight and easy-to-use properties, as well as its outstanding environmental credentials.
Special Needs, Special Product
Chatswood Public School's motto is "Excellence in a caring and enriching environment." As part of the BER program, CPS intended to create an environment suitable to foster an exceptional and enjoyable learning experience for pupils. The 6 new classrooms needed to be adequately acoustically insulation, pleasing and stimulating to the senses as well as meet NSW Government specifications for wall linings as required in NSW public schools.
Straight A's
Tontine Fibres supplied builder Quasar Constructions with Acousti-PanelTM acoustic boards faced with Melded Fabric's Interlude® Plush Fabric in Lilli Pad green.
Acousti-PanelTM was made to NSW Government specification for wall linings and is 100% recyclable (meeting environmental standards) and made from recycled materials.
Acousti-PanelTM can also double as a pin board, perfect for presenting pupil's work on classroom walls.

Nov 29

Many people invest a lot of time into researching the best carpet for them, but have you given any thought to the stuff that goes underneath - the underlay?
Carpet underlay, although a floor-covering's boring older brother, can often be the unsung hero in getting the best performance and value for money from your carpet. Good quality underlay will extend the life of your carpet by reducing wear and tear, provide thermal and acoustic insulation and should help your carpet sit flat without 'bubbling', creating a nice even finish.
If you don't know much about underlay, it helps to avail yourself of the information about different types of underlay out there. Typically you will find that carpet underlay can be made out of felt, rubber or foam (unless you happen to live in the dark ages when people use old newspapers or - eek! - nothing at all!). Each have their pros and cons.
Foam underlay is generally:
- cheaper
- readily obtainable
- easy to install
however some find it is not as soft and comfortable underfoot as felt underlay, and can deteriorate quicker than rubber. Once the foam starts to disintegrate it will lose its shape which will result in uneven wear and tear on your covering carpet, shortening its lifespan.
Rubber underlay is generally:
- hard wearing and long lasting
- thermally and acoustically insulating
- sourced from a natural resource
however it also may not be as soft as felt. Some cheaper rubber underlays will also stick to the floorboards after a number of years, making them difficult to remove.
Felt underlay can be made from recycled textiles, jute (a natural plant fibre) or a combination of jute and hair. Here at Tontine FIbres we manufacture both types.
Felt underlay is generally:
- recyclable and biodegradable
- thermally and acoustically insulating
- soft and comfortable underfoot
however it is not as well known as its two other cousins.
The choice of underlay is up to you however, like everything else, you get what you pay for. So get the best quality you can afford and it will be cheaper in the long run when your covering carpet is still plush and fresh for years to come.
